Difficult Times
In the past few days,
weve witnessed dramatic events that can affect us deeply. Our technology
has developed so incredibly that we can know far more than ever before. The
news media has presented us with such in-depth information that we can
easily become over-stimulated and overwhelmed. I care what is happening in
Iraq but I dont need a minute-by-minute description -- or worse a constant
reiteration of the latest tally, the supposed strategy, or eye witness
accounts of the horrors of war.
During the aftermath of
9/11, I saw the anxiety rate increase dramatically in my clients and also
noticed it in myself. Heres what I do to maintain my own integrity.
I limit my exposure to
the news. Its really easy to get sucked inafter all its vital, its even
interesting from a strategic point of view. Its like a reality mystery.
Its also really hard to remain peaceful in the midst of all the TV
producers are putting out to us. While its important to stay informed,
protect your well-being by monitoring how you are feeling and adjusting your
TV viewing accordingly. Our newspaper has a special War section that
provides maps and amazing information. When I first saw this, I thought it
was very much like an elaborate version of the Soldiers games my brother
and I played as kids. Only this isnt a game. I dont read it.
I meditate. Some would
call it prayer. I do it every dayseveral times a day. I breathe deeply for
a few breaths and allow myself to be peaceful. I allow peace to flow over
me, as though I am in a spring shower. Then I allow peace to flow in me and
through me. Once I feel peaceful through and through, I imagine the peace in
me rising up, a circle rising to the sky. Eventually it becomes a huge ring
that encircles the earth and I ask for peace for all beings. I send
blessings to our world leaders, to the armed forces, and to the people under
attack.
The third thing I do is
take action. Sometimes its as simple as turning off the TV and sending my
peace prayers. Other times, Ive signed a petition, sent money, or shown up
somewhere in support of my personal beliefs. I also try to hear the message
of those who have an opposite view. This is the learning edge for me,
understanding a different point of view. Ive had some good material to work
with lately and Ive been making some headway! I encourage you to find a way
to take action that is congruent with your beliefs.
Dealing with
Difficult Times
Ø
Limit news.
Ø
Meditate or pray.
Ø
Take action.
Remember, we are all
citizens of this world. This is a time to connect with those you love and
care about. Lets pray for all of us, particularly people who are in harms
way.
